thailand, pattaya, khao kheow open zoo - Thai zoo sees a surge in visitors due to the popularity of a baby hippo named Moo Deng, but some fans are going too far with their idolatry, prompting concerns about the animal's well-being.

Thailand is currently captivated by a baby hippo at the Khao Kheow Open Zoo near Pattaya. The hippo, named Moo Deng, became an internet sensation for its cuteness, leading to a doubling of zoo visitors in the following months.

However, some fans have taken their admiration too far, as videos have surfaced online showing visitors throwing food at the hippo and splashing water on it to wake it up.

Zoo director Narongwit Chodchoi has issued a statement online urging people to behave appropriately. 'This behavior is not only cruel, but also dangerous. We need to protect these animals and ensure they have a safe and comfortable environment,' he said. The zoo has also installed security cameras around the hippo enclosure and threatened legal action against anyone who mistreats Moo Deng.

Pygmy hippos, native to West Africa, are an endangered species, with experts estimating that fewer than 3,000 remain in the wild.
