berlin - The union of CDU and CSU has put forward Friedrich Merz as the candidate for the German chancellorship. Read more on Telegraaf.nl.

The symbolic spot was deliberately chosen as the Bavarian delegation in Berlin, highlighting the unity between the two parties.

Markus Söder, the power-conscious premier, announced the news, acknowledging CDU's precedence in the decision-making process. Söder, who had also been in talks as a potential candidate for the chancellorship, has now withdrawn his candidacy.

In the previous campaign in 2021, there was a fierce competition between Merz's CDU and the smaller Bavarian sister party CSU. The then candidate narrowly secured the candidacy against Söder, but later suffered a clear defeat against Olaf Scholz of the SPD.

Merz emphasized the CDU's position as the last remaining people's party of the democratic center, pointing out the challenges posed by the right-wing AfD and the economic crisis faced by major companies like Volkswagen and Intel. He expressed concerns about migration dominating the upcoming election agenda.

Rivalry with Angela Merkel, his lack of government experience, and his background as a lobbyist and chairman at Blackrock were also mentioned in the context of Merz's candidacy.
