palm beach - A man who was arrested near the golf course where former US president Donald Trump was playing has been charged with illegal gun possession. The man, Ryan Wesley Routh, was not allowed to have a weapon as a convicted person and his gun had no serial number. There may be further charges against the man in the future.

The man was spotted by Trump's security, lying in the bushes with a rifle, a few hundred meters from the Republican presidential candidate. The Secret Service then opened fire. Routh fled but was apprehended on the highway. The FBI stated Sunday that it appeared to be an attempt to shoot Trump.

Phone data shows Routh spent over eleven hours in the area along the tree line of the golf resort before being noticed by authorities, according to the criminal complaint. Routh was there on Sunday from 01:59 am to around 01:31 pm.

Prosecutors want Routh to remain in custody as a danger to the community. Reuters reports that these initial charges of illegal gun possession are likely meant to keep him detained while further legal proceedings take place.
