brussels - In order to increase confidence in food safety after all the controversy about the herbicide glyphosate, the European Commission wants to give consumers better insight into how the risks are determined. The studies on, for example, the authorization of pesticides by the European Food Safety Authority (EFSA) will be accessible to everyone, as will the underlying research material from manufacturers.

EFSA may decide not to disclose certain trade secrets or documents that may harm commercial interests.

Citizens and social organizations are entitled to public participation. 'People are absolutely right to ask for the highest standards of transparency and research when it comes to their health and that of their children,' said Vice President Frans Timmermans.
