- Female circumcision must give way to new, harmless rites. That Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon of the United Nations argued Monday.
Ban stated, in a speech to mark the international day against the mutilation of female genitals, the ripeness test presently undergoing many young girls in Kenya and Tanzania as an example. They are according to the Secretary-General not circumcised, but spend a week without their family by to learn to live independently.
UNICEF estimates that more than two hundred million girls and women worldwide are victims of female genital mutilation. That estimate is much higher than before.
