brussels - Turkey meets 35 of the 72 requirements to qualify for visa-free travel to the European Union. That migration director Marta Cygan of the European Commission said Thursday.

The EU promised last month that Turks in late June without a visa to travel to Europe and meet all the conditions. Turkey has short time to show it. The committee has come up with a May 4 report on this. Ankara has threatened that if the promise is not fulfilled, the agreement to take back refugees from Greece on the job.

Cygan said in Parliament that Turkey accelerated many legal and administrative obstacles is eliminated. The country must, however, include spending more biometric passports, not allow Syrian refugees into the labor market and better integrate Roma. Also reducing the substantial backlog in the processing of asylum applications is a prerequisite for visa facilitation.

Following the example of many Member States and committee chairman Jean-Claude Juncker said MEP Sophie in 't Veld (D66) that the criteria should not be relaxed.
