France wants other people's representation

World April 4, 2018 17:33

paris - French Prime Minister Édouard Philippe has presented his plans to reform the elections and parliament. He wants to reduce the total number of MPs in the National Assembly and in the Senate, now 925 MPs, by 30 percent.

Philippe also wants 15 percent of the elected representatives in the parliamentary elections of 2022 to be elected through a system of proportional representation.

The French House of Representatives now comes about through elections in a district system. In addition, a Member of Parliament for the seat of the department or district is elected in two rounds if no one in the first reaches more than half. This often leads to many voters being 'in the cold' in the second round because their favorites have fallen out.
