Former French President Nicolas Sarkozy to Wear Electronic Tag for One Year
paris - The French Court of Cassation upholds the conviction of former President Nicolas Sarkozy for corruption, resulting in a final sentence. Sarkozy must wear an electronic tag for a year.
The Court rejected Sarkozy's appeal, confirming his conviction for trying to bribe a judge by offering a job in exchange for secret information related to allegations of illegal campaign financing. The 69-year-old politician was sentenced to three years in prison, with two years suspended, but will not serve any time behind bars.
Having served as president from 2007 to 2012, Sarkozy is barred from holding public office for the next three years. Despite this verdict, he remains a prominent figure in French politics.
According to his lawyer, Sarkozy intends to comply with the sentence's implementation following the Court's decision. He also plans to take his case to the European Court of Human Rights while maintaining his innocence. Sarkozy asserts he has done nothing wrong and believes in eventual vindication, stating, 'The truth will prevail.'
Sarkozy faces further legal troubles, including a trial next year concerning corruption and allegations of illegal Libyan funding for his campaign, known as the 'Libya affair.' If convicted, he could face up to ten years in prison.
