German Government Accuses Elon Musk of Election Interference
berlin - The German government has accused American billionaire Elon Musk of interference in and influencing the Bundestag elections to be held in February.
The German government has accused the American billionaire Elon Musk of interfering in and influencing the upcoming Bundestag elections in February. A spokesperson for the German government stated, "Elon Musk is trying to influence the federal elections with posts on social media and the opinion article." The spokesperson added, "Musk is, of course, free to express his opinion. Freedom of speech also includes the biggest nonsense."
In his opinion piece, Musk argued that "only the AfD can save Germany." He had previously made similar statements on social media. Musk defended the AfD by pointing out that the party's leader, Alice Weidel, has a same-sex partner from Sri Lanka. He challenged the portrayal of the AfD as far-right by asking, "Does that sound like Hitler to you? Please."
The German government party SPD criticized Musk for his support of the AfD. Lars Klingbeil, the co-chair of the Social Democrats led by Chancellor Olaf Scholz, compared Musk to Russian President Vladimir Putin. Klingbeil accused both Musk and Putin of trying to influence the elections and specifically supporting the AfD against democracy. He stated, "They want to weaken Germany and plunge it into chaos."
