Tragic Incidents at Tour of Flanders
During the Tour of Flanders for amateur cyclists, a Dutch man tragically passed away due to a heart failure at Taaienberg in Maarkedal. Despite prompt medical assistance, all efforts were in vain, according to Peloton's spokesperson, Gert Van Goolen.
Another participant fell ill at Oude Kwaremont in Kluisbergen and despite extensive resuscitation efforts and helicopter transport to the hospital, the individual also succumbed to the condition. Fortunately, a third participant who fell ill at Eikenberg in Maarkedal was successfully resuscitated.
Multiple serious incidents occurred on the event course, including a rider being airlifted from Koppenberg due to a suspected ankle fracture.
The popular cycling event attracts numerous participants from the Netherlands and other countries like France, England, and Germany, with an estimated 10,000 international participants out of the expected 15,000 attendees. Participants have the unique opportunity to ride on the same course used for the professional Ronde van Vlaanderen race on Sunday.
