geneva - A large and rare blue diamond was auctioned Wednesday for a record amount equivalent to nearly 51.3 million. The so-called Blue Oppenheimer is the largest and most valuable blue diamond ever offered at auction, Christie's auction house announced.

The yield of the gem of 14.62 carats was estimated by Chistie's between 33.9 and 40.1 million. Finally counted the buyer, whose identity was not disclosed, substantially more down. The sale followed a 20-minute battle between two bidders participated by phone.

The former world record was established by the auction of another spectacular blue diamond. The 'Blue Moon' did in November last year 45 million during a sale by Sotheby's.
