Spanish Rescue Services Find Newborn Baby on Migrant Boat at the Beginning of the Year
barcelona - Spanish rescue services discovered a newborn baby on a migrant boat heading towards the Canary Islands at the start of the new year. The influx of migrant boats to the region continues, with 2,400 migrants arriving in just eight days.
Spanish rescue services found a newborn baby on a migrant boat heading towards the Canary Islands at the beginning of the year. Despite the new year being only eight days old, 2,400 migrants have already arrived, following a record-breaking year with over 46 thousand migrants landing on Las Canarias. On Three Kings Day, the Spanish rescue services found a particularly special passenger - a baby born on board.
Three Kings Day is one of the most beloved holidays in Spain. On January 6th, Spaniards celebrate the arrival of the Three Wise Men who brought gifts to baby Jesus. For many Spanish children, this day is just as important, if not more so, than Christmas. It was on this day that the Spanish rescue services discovered the mother and baby on a boat carrying 60 migrants, including 14 women - all of sub-Saharan origin.
The mother and baby appeared calm and in good health. They were airlifted to Arrecife Airport, where an ambulance was waiting to transport them to the hospital in the capital of Lanzarote for medical checks.
Salvamento Marítimo, the Spanish rescue service, captured the moment they found the newborn baby in a photo and shared it on their social media channels, along with the caption: 'Our crew in the Canary Islands has started the year intensively.' Coincidentally, in 2020, the captain of the coast guard, Domingo Trujillo, experienced a similar situation. At that time, the Salvamar unit, under his leadership, rescued the occupants of a boat, including a woman who had just given birth. On that occasion, he even had to cut the umbilical cord himself.
