Scientists Discover Meat-Eating Caterpillar Camouflaged with Prey Remains

Researchers in Hawaii have identified a unique caterpillar species that disguises itself with the body parts of its unconsumed prey. The camouflaged caterpillar, named Bone Collector, avoids detection by spiders, tricking them into believing it is a leftover meal.

Research Findings

The University of Hawaii scientists found remnants of up to six different insects on one specimen of the newly discovered caterpillar species. They observed the caterpillar's exclusive interest in animal remains for its disguise, showing a remarkable survival strategy.

Lead researcher Dan Rubinoff expressed astonishment at the discovery, describing the caterpillar's behavior as 'insane.' Despite living in close proximity to predators, the caterpillar thrives by scavenging their food, earning the moniker Bone Collector.
