Jackson's torso was found in a garbage bin at Hempstead Lake State Park in New York in 1997, while Dykes was discovered in 2011 near Gilgo Beach. The identification of the bodies brings closure to the family after years of uncertainty.

The Long Island police began connecting the dots in 2011, leading to the main suspect, Rex Heuermann, a 61-year-old architect. He was arrested in 2023 and is accused of seven murders, earning him the moniker 'Long Island serial killer'.
