london - French scientists say they have found a link between the zikavirus and the onset of Guillain-Barré Syndrome (GBS), a muscle disease that leads to the inadequacy or absence of the muscles.

Patients in countries affected by the zikavirus have an increased risk of getting GBS, say researchers from the Institut Pasteur in Paris. The results of their research are published Tuesday in the journal The Lancet.

GBS is a rare condition in which the human immune system attacks part of nerves, usually several days after a patient became ill from a virus, bacterium or parasite.

When an outbreak of zikavirus in French Polynesia in 2013 and 2014 showed that 10 per 000 people, the virus carried with them, there 2.4 get the chance GBS walked. In 42-GBS patients there was evidence that they were previously infected with the zikavirus. In 93 percent of GBS cases developed the disease after zikabesmetting within three months.

Research leader Arnaud Fontanet expected in countries with a zika epidemic a significant increase in people with neurological disorders such as GBS.
