rawson - An Argentinian farmer in the province of Chubut has been sentenced to three years in prison for killing over a hundred penguin chicks.
The man has been found guilty of destroying dozens of nests and killing chicks in 2021. He wanted to use the land where the penguins had their habitat for his business. The region is one of the primary habitats of the Magellanic penguin.
It is unlikely that the farmer will serve the sentence, as in Argentina, first-time offenders are eligible for alternative penalties.
Greenpeace initiated the legal proceedings against the man and is satisfied with the verdict. 'It is an important step towards environmental justice,' the organization said.
