Five sled dogs that fatally attacked 7-year-old Aodren in Quévy, Belgium, have been euthanized with the consent of the family. The tragic incident occurred at a dog breeding facility while the child was feeding Alaska Malamute dogs.
The child was in the company of his mother when five of the dogs suddenly rushed towards him, according to the French news channel RTBF.
Following the tragic event, the decision was made to euthanize the five dogs. 'The family gave consent for it,' said David Voland, the mayor of Quévy, to the Belgian news outlet Sudinfo.
Aodren's older brother Kerian was also at home during the accident. When he heard his mother screaming, he rushed to help. 'My mother tried to separate Aodren's dogs, but she couldn't,' he told Sudinfo. 'When I saw it, I was shocked. My little brother was unconscious and not breathing anymore.'
The boy was taken to a hospital in the Belgian village of Hornu but succumbed to his injuries. The mother sustained minor injuries and is in shock. 'These were one-year-old dogs, but they had never shown aggression before,' said Kerian. 'We've been raising Alaska Malamutes for fifteen years, and this has never happened before.'
Meanwhile, the school where the boy attended, Heilig-Hartschool in Givry, has initiated a fundraising campaign to support his family. A memorial service will also be held on Monday. 'Donations can be made to the following account: BE16 0689 3912 9674. Please mention AODREN in the transaction description,' the school posted on Facebook.
