Kenyan Government Labels Action Against Dutch Royal Visit as Cyberattack
nairobi - The Kenyan government accuses influencers of spreading false information and cyberattacks ahead of the Dutch royal visit.
Kenyan Government vs. 'Influencers'
The Kenyan government has accused influencers of undermining its work with false information and cyberattacks on social media. They are targeting 'high-level international contacts' which raise doubts about Kenya's credibility.
Opponents of President William Ruto believe the royal visit is too much of an honor for him and have launched an online petition against the visit, signed by over 9000 people according to Kenyan media.
Last year, protests and violent unrest occurred due to Ruto's plans to significantly increase taxes to address the budget deficit. Youth took to the streets demanding the president's resignation. The demonstrations escalated, leading to the storming of the parliament building on June 25.
There were casualties, injuries, and numerous arrests. Human Rights Watch reported alleged abductions, torture, and killings by the security forces during the unrest. Since then, Ruto has been heavily criticized on social media, particularly by young people.
