Drinking toxic alcohol has claimed the lives of at least thirty people in Istanbul this week, with authorities noting a significant increase in cases of methanol poisoning since Monday.
Aside from the deaths, authorities also report at least 49 people being hospitalized. Among the victims are dozens of foreigners.
Cheap methanol is sometimes added to beverages to increase their potency, posing a danger to consumers. Methanol poisoning can result in liver damage, blindness, and even death. In Turkey, popular drinks like raki are often counterfeited. Authorities are cracking down on such practices by shutting down businesses selling counterfeit alcohol products and confiscating the drinks.
