About thirty students were injured on Wednesday when multiple molotov cocktails exploded in a bathroom at their high school in the Chilean capital Santiago. The incident occurred while a graduation party was being prepared. Minister of Health Ximena Aguilera reported that five students are in critical condition. Police chief Fernando Albornoz stated that it is unclear why the molotov cocktails exploded. Many students suffered burns from the resulting flames. Minister of the Interior Carolina Toha described the situation as a tragedy. Students from the Barros Arana National Boarding School have been involved in demonstrations and clashes with police in recent years, advocating for increased funding for public education. Toha emphasized that molotov cocktails are weapons and are not acceptable tools for protests. The intentions of the students remain unclear. Prosecutor Macarena Cañas, involved in the investigation, is looking into possible involvement of teachers and whether the materials for the molotov cocktails were brought into the school on Wednesday or earlier. Bottles containing fuel were reportedly found in the bathroom where the explosion occurred.
