Ukrainians Skeptical of Trump's Peace Plan for Ukraine
kiev - Despite promising immediate peace in Ukraine, Trump's inauguration has not halted the fighting, leaving Ukrainians skeptical.
Ukrainians Doubt Trump's Peace Plan
Many Ukrainians express skepticism towards Trump's promise of swift peace in Ukraine, as the fighting continues despite his inauguration. 'Volvo,' a medic in the Ukrainian army, remarks, 'He promised to stop the war within 24 hours. Of course, he didn't end it in that time.' Writer and soldier Artyem also doubts Trump's ability to end the war quickly, stating, 'Those 24 hours have passed, right? ... I don't think it matters what they all say in public. They are a team of attention seekers.' Lawmaker Yaroslav Yurchyshyn understands the delay, noting, 'We recognize that Trump will prioritize domestic affairs over foreign affairs. We haven't forgotten that Trump promised to end the war within 24 hours, but even before the inauguration, his team understood that more time would be needed to achieve that goal. Hours, days, or even months would not be enough.' Another lawmaker, Oleksandr Merezh, expresses understanding that Trump hasn't fulfilled his promise yet, saying, 'That was to be expected.' He, like Yurchyshyn, acknowledges that the focus will be on domestic policy first: 'The key will be if he presents a realistic plan to end Russian aggression. So far, I haven't seen such a plan.' Meanwhile, Putin has expressed openness to dialogue with the US on the Ukrainian conflict but emphasized no talks on a ceasefire allowing replenishment of troops. Trump, in response, threatened sanctions if Russia refuses to negotiate.'
