germany - German researchers found that smartphone addiction triggers similar brain signals as nicotine and alcohol addiction.
German Study on Smartphone Addiction
German scientists have demonstrated the relationship between smartphone use and addiction, revealing brain activity resembling that of nicotine and alcohol dependency. A study conducted at Heidelberg and Cologne Universities involved 25 young adults aged 18-30. Participants were asked to limit smartphone use for 72 hours, resulting in changes in brain activation associated with addiction-related neurotransmitter systems. MRI scans showed activation of reward and addiction mechanisms in response to phone images, indicating the addictive impact of smartphones.
Similarities to Nicotine and Alcohol
When participants were shown various images after the 72-hour detox period, including open and closed smartphones, as well as 'neutral' images like boats and flowers, brain changes resembling those linked to substance addiction were observed in regions associated with reward processing and cravings. This suggests that smartphones could potentially create addiction similar to nicotine or alcohol.
