Detention Extended
A South Korean court has decided to extend the detention of suspended president Yoon Suk-yeol due to concerns that he may tamper with evidence. Yoon can be held for up to twenty more days as he remains in custody in the capital Seoul. He appeared before the judges who deliberated on his detention. Earlier, he had refused any questioning.
Dozens of Yoon's supporters did not take the court's decision well and stormed the building, breaking windows. Outside the court, tens of thousands of protesters had gathered to show their support for the disgraced president, demanding Yoon's release. Clashes ensued with security forces, leading to the arrest of forty protesters.
According to his lawyer, Yoon has 'the intention to restore his honor.' The declaration of martial law was not considered an uprising. The brief state of emergency has plunged South Korea into its biggest political crisis in decades.
