More than 30,000 residents of the upscale neighborhood of Pacific Palisades in Los Angeles were evacuated on Tuesday due to a devastating fire that is sweeping through the area, as reported by the Los Angeles Times.
The fire was fueled by strong gusts of wind, causing it to grow rapidly. By the afternoon, the fire had already engulfed over 1200 hectares of land.
Meteorologists predict that the wind will intensify throughout the night from Tuesday to Wednesday, indicating that the fire danger will persist at least until Wednesday morning. "We are not out of danger yet," said Anthony C. Marrone, head of the Los Angeles County Fire Department. Marrone added that everyone in the vicinity should have an emergency plan ready. Officials are advising that anyone leaving their homes should leave doors unlocked and turn off the power.
Witnesses reported to the newspaper that multiple houses were on fire and cars were engulfed in flames. Abandoned vehicles were cleared from the roads with bulldozers to allow emergency services to pass through. Only one main road provides access to the secluded neighborhood, leading to traffic jams and people fleeing on foot.
The cause of the fire is not yet clear.
