berlin - The Berlin police warn the Jewish community and homosexuals in Berlin of unsafe situations in certain neighborhoods. Police chief Barbara Slowik urges vigilance and reports of suspicious activities.
The Berlin police are cautioning the Jewish community and homosexuals in Berlin about unsafe conditions. Police chief Barbara Slowik warns that in some neighborhoods, it may be unsafe for these groups. 'There are areas - and we must be honest about this - where people wearing a yarmulke or openly gay or lesbian must be vigilant,' the Berlin police chief told the Berliner Zeitung. 'Unfortunately, there are certain neighborhoods in which the majority of people are of Arab descent and also have more sympathy for terrorist groups.'
Slowik mentions that in these specific places, open antisemitism is expressed against the Jewish community. She emphasizes that so far, few cases of violence have been reported in the German capital. 'But every crime is one too many. I understand that fear and concerns arise among certain groups,' she explains.
The police chief urges people to be vigilant and report suspicious activities to the police. She assures that the police will do everything possible to ensure the safety of Berlin residents. The police chief does not name the 'dangerous' neighborhoods. However, she stresses that Berlin is as safe as other capitals in Europe.
