Germany records 2500 illegal border crossings in two weeks
berlin - The German police have registered nearly 2500 illegal border crossings in the past two weeks.
Between September 16 and 30, 1546 people were turned away at the border, according to the federal police on Tuesday. Additionally, 69 individuals were sent back with entry bans. The federal police also reported that 49 individuals have been arrested on suspicion of human trafficking. No information has been shared about which borders these individuals were turned away from.
The controls, which will last for six months, are aimed at reducing the number of people entering Germany without proper documentation. The controls along the borders with the Netherlands, Belgium, Denmark, and Luxembourg are new, while controls were already in place at the other neighboring countries.
The German police union recently stated that the new border controls have had little effect on curbing illegal migration, as very few illegal migrants and smugglers have been detected at the western borders. According to the union, the checkpoint can also be bypassed.
