Canadian Prime Minister Trudeau Announces Departure
ottawa - Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau has announced his departure after nearly ten years in power. Trudeau stated in a press conference that he will remain in office until a successor is chosen by his party.
Trudeau, who has been Prime Minister since 2015, was under pressure to resign as Canada gears up for parliamentary elections in October and his Liberal Party is polling poorly.
There is also a looming motion of no confidence against the government, which lacks a majority in parliament. Trudeau announced that parliamentary work will be suspended until March 24, meaning no confidence vote can be held for now.
'This country deserves a real choice in the next election,' Trudeau declared at the press conference, acknowledging the internal unrest and stating he is no longer the best candidate to lead his party.
Recent years have seen dissatisfaction over issues common in Western countries, such as inflation, housing prices, and migration. The Liberal Party's coalition partner, the New Democratic Party, withdrew their support for the government last year.
The progressive Liberal Party will now have to choose a successor for the 53-year-old Trudeau, son of former Prime Minister Pierre Trudeau. The new party leader will likely also become the new Prime Minister.
This political turmoil comes at a sensitive time as neighboring United States will see Donald Trump assume presidency this month. Trump has threatened heavy import tariffs on Canada if border security is not improved.
