marguerite, pennsylvania - A search is underway in the village of Marguerite, Pennsylvania for 64-year-old Elizabeth Pollard who disappeared while looking for her cat. Police suspect she may have fallen into a sinkhole discovered in the vicinity.

In the town of Marguerite in Pennsylvania, a search operation is ongoing for Elizabeth Pollard, 64, who went missing on Monday while searching for her cat Pepper. Elizabeth's granddaughter was found in her car parked nearby. Police suspect that the woman may have fallen into a sinkhole discovered further down the area.

Elizabeth's family reported her missing on Monday night at 01:00. The woman's car, with her 5-year-old granddaughter inside, was found on Tuesday morning at 02:50 near Monday's Union restaurant in Marguerite, a village about 65 kilometers east of Pittsburgh.

According to Trooper Steve Limani, the girl, who thankfully remained unharmed, had fallen asleep in the car. When she woke up, she patiently waited for her grandmother. "But she never came back."

When the police searched the area around the parked car, they discovered the sinkhole. They spoke with restaurant staff and hunters, but none of them had seen the hole before. This leads the police to believe that the hole formed at the moment Elizabeth walked over it.

Police officers were able to use a camera to look into the sinkhole. At a depth of nine meters, they saw something that appeared to be a shoe.

Emergency services will continue the search in the sinkhole. "We are fairly certain that we are searching in the right place."

According to the police, sinkholes are not uncommon in the region due to subsidence resulting from coal mine activities.
