A cruise around the world, set to last over three years, departed from Belfast, Northern Ireland on Monday evening. The ship, the Villa Vie Odyssey, had faced technical problems resulting in a delay of four months including issues with the rudder and propulsion. The passengers had been staying in hotels and other accommodations in the city for the past few months.
The BBC reported that around 125 passengers boarded the ship on Monday evening, and the vessel set sail out of the port just before midnight local time. There was applause and cheers as passengers expressed their excitement for the journey ahead. The Guardian stated that the majority of passengers are Americans, including some who plan to stay on board until their death.
The Odyssey is a cruise ship around thirty years old that has recently been refurbished. The company behind the ship offers "perpetual cruises", with passengers able to purchase a cabin starting from around 100,000 euros. It is also possible to rent a stay on board for part of the journey starting from approximately 2200 euros per month. With a capacity for around 600 passengers, in addition to a restaurant, pool, and spa, there are also medical facilities on board.
During the first voyage, 425 ports across all continents will be visited.
