Ukraine and US report first North Korean casualties in Koersk: 'We need prisoners for certainty'
koersk, ukraine, united states, russia - Ukraine and the United States have reported the first North Korean casualties in the region of Koersk, where thousands of soldiers from North Korea have been aiding Russia in its conflict against Ukraine.
At least thirty North Korean soldiers were wounded or killed during clashes in Koersk, according to Ukraine's military intelligence agency GUR. Pentagon spokesperson Patrick Ryder confirmed that North Korean troops were involved in the fighting, but did not provide specific numbers.
This is the first time official sources have confirmed the presence of North Korean soldiers in the conflict between Russia and Ukraine. Reports had emerged a month and a half ago about the potential presence of around ten thousand North Korean soldiers in Russia, but formal confirmation had been lacking.
Academic experts acknowledge the reliability of the reports from Kiev and Washington, but note the difficulty in verifying much of the information. Social media posts purporting to show North Korean soldiers in combat have surfaced, but Lieutenant Colonel Simoens warns against hasty conclusions based on such content.
Ukrainian intelligence also reported eight Russian soldiers killed by 'friendly fire' from North Korean troops, attributing it to miscommunication between the forces.
Official Russian media coverage of the situation in Koersk has been scarce, likely due to the embarrassment caused by the attack. Academic assessments suggest that the North Korean troops may not possess the capabilities to significantly impact the conflict.
