canberra - The death toll from toxic alcohol in a hostel in Laos has risen to six, according to the Australian Foreign Minister.
Bowles is the second Australian to have died. The other was her best friend, 19-year-old Bianca Jones. The other victims are a 28-year-old woman from the United Kingdom, two Danes, and an American.
About a week and a half ago, around twelve people fell ill from unsafe alcohol, including a Dutch tourist. It is suspected that they consumed drinks contaminated with methanol, a dangerous form of alcohol that can be found in poorly produced beverages or added intentionally to produce cheaper liquor.
The owner of Nana Backpackers Hostel in Vang Vieng was taken into custody by the police for questioning. No charges have been filed so far. The Dutch tourist has been discharged from the hospital.
