Russia Allegedly Executes Ukrainian Prisoners in Kursk

World October 13, 2024 20:35

kiev - Russia is accused of executing nine Ukrainian prisoners in the Kursk region. The Ukrainian Prosecutor's Office has announced an investigation into the incident.

The execution of the nine Ukrainian prisoners was reported on Sunday and is said to have taken place on Thursday. Some of the executed prisoners were believed to be drone pilots. The group, thinking they were relatively far from the front, was suddenly ambushed by a group of Russian soldiers. Further details are currently unknown. DeepState has released a photo showing the prisoners lying naked on the ground surrounded by men in military uniforms.

In response, Ukrainian ombudsman Dmytro Lubinets condemned the act as "a blatant violation of the Geneva Convention." Lubinets continued on the social media platform Telegram, stating, "These acts must not go unpunished, and the enemy must be held accountable. Russia is a terrorist country that violates all rules and customs of war. The international community must not turn a blind eye to such crimes."

If the execution indeed took place, as Lubinets indicated, it would constitute a violation of the Geneva Convention. Executing prisoners of war is considered a war crime. The act of stripping prisoners is also prohibited, unless done to humiliate the Ukrainians. It is known that captured soldiers are sometimes stripped to prevent them from hiding weapons, although this is not a standard procedure, according to Kyiv Post.

This is not the first time Ukraine has reported executions of its soldiers by Russia. Over the past two and a half years since the start of the Russian invasion, there have been numerous reported executions. Just a week ago, three Ukrainian soldiers were allegedly killed after being captured in the occupied Donetsk region in the east of the country. The Ukrainian Public Prosecutor's Office is investigating these executions as possible war crimes. Attorney General Andriy Kostin has also announced an investigation into the executions in Kursk.

Meanwhile, the Ukrainian offensive in Kursk appears to have stalled. In his daily address to the nation, President Volodymyr Zelensky stated on Saturday that Ukrainians are maintaining and defending the current frontline against Russian counterattacks. Temporary ground was reportedly ceded but later reclaimed by Ukrainian military forces.
