Revealing Documents Shed New Light on Navalny's Death in Penal Colony: Alleged Cover-up by Russian Authorities
russia - Recently obtained documents from the Russian independent news site The Insider shed new light on the death of Russian opposition leader Alexei Navalny in a penal colony, suggesting a possible cover-up by Russian authorities regarding the cause of death.
Russian opposition leader Alexei Navalny died on February 16 in a Russian penal colony, sparking ongoing speculation about the cause of his death. Documents obtained by The Insider reveal that Navalny was likely poisoned, a fact allegedly concealed by Russian authorities.
The Insider has obtained two documents signed by Alexander Varapaev, a government inspector who examined whether there were grounds to initiate a criminal procedure into Navalny's death. The first document states that on February 16, just before his death, Navalny informed guards that he was feeling unwell, experiencing symptoms such as sudden abdominal pain, nausea, and epileptic seizures. Navalny eventually passed out and was taken to the medical unit of the penal colony.
However, a second version of the document makes no mention of these symptoms. Instead, Russian authorities concluded that Navalny died of a heart rhythm disorder. No criminal procedure was launched into Navalny's death. Emergency medical physician Alexander Polupan, who treated Navalny for a previous poisoning in 2020, remarked that the symptoms described in the first document are inconsistent with a heart rhythm disorder, suggesting that cases of abdominal pain, vomiting, and epileptic seizures are likely the result of poisonings.
Navalny's mother, Lyudmila Navalnaya, previously stated that state inspector Varapaev had pressured her to secretly bury her son. Navalny, the deceased opposition leader, was eventually given a public funeral in Moscow.
