seoul - The main opposition party in South Korea, the Democratic Party, is set to vote on the impeachment of President Yoon Suk-yeol on Saturday. The impeachment procedure follows President Yoon's unexpected decision to declare a military state of emergency.
The main opposition party in South Korea, the Democratic Party, is scheduled to vote on the impeachment of President Yoon Suk-yeol on Saturday at 19.00 local time. The decision to impeach President Yoon came after he declared a military state of emergency, a move that was later reversed after facing opposition in parliament. The impeachment procedure was supported by 191 parliamentarians, none of whom belonged to the ruling PPP. The Democratic Party had previously stated that the president should choose between voluntary or forced resignation.
President Yoon can be impeached if a two-thirds majority of parliament votes for his removal. His party, the PPP, holds 108 seats out of three hundred. The next step in the impeachment process would involve the constitutional court, which consists of nine judges. At least six of them must agree to the impeachment in order to remove President Yoon from office.
