Investigation into Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni
Italian prosecutors have initiated an investigation into Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni and several members of her cabinet following the release of Libyan warlord Osama Elmasry Njeem in Italy.
Prosecutors suspect Meloni of aiding and abetting a crime and misusing public funds. Meloni has vowed not to succumb to blackmail and intimidation, stating her commitment to the betterment of Italy despite facing opposition.
The investigation stems from the controversial release and repatriation of Njeem to Libya, in defiance of an arrest warrant issued by the International Criminal Court. The legal complaint prompting the investigation is believed to have been filed by lawyer Luigi Li Gotti.
Furthermore, Meloni highlighted a parallel investigation led by the same prosecutor against Deputy Prime Minister Matteo Salvini for his actions in delaying the docking of a migrant rescue ship in Sicily in 2019. Salvini was acquitted of these charges last month.
