Iranian Parliament Speaker Reveals Suspension of Headscarf Law
During a speech at Allameh Tabataba'i University in Tehran, Iranian Parliament Speaker Mohammed Bagher Ghalibaf disclosed that the mandatory headscarf law is not being enforced based on a decision by the National Security Council. Ghalibaf mentioned that if a law creates tension, the Council Secretariat has the authority to halt its implementation. The law, titled 'Support for Chastity and Headscarf Culture,' was approved by the Parliament in September 2023 but has not been implemented.
Following the death of Mahsa Amini in September 2022, who was detained for violating the headscarf obligation, protests erupted, leading to numerous casualties. Subsequently, the non-compliance rate with the law increased.
