How dozens survived heavy plane crash in Kazakhstan: 'One factor makes the difference'
aqtau - Nearly 29 people survived the plane crash in Kazakhstan which left some of them trembling on their legs but strong enough to walk away.
The plane, operated by Azerbaijan Airlines, took off from Baku, Azerbaijan, heading to Grozny, Chechnya, Russia. Due to fog, the flight was redirected to Kazakhstan, on the other side of the Caspian Sea.
Authorities reported almost forty deaths from the plane crash in Kazakhstan.
Onboard the Embraer 190 were around 70 people, mostly Azerbaijanis and Russians, with 32 of them surviving the crash, including two children. Rescuers saw confused passengers walking out of the wreckage.
Benno Baksteen, former KLM captain and ex-chairman of an aviation safety advisory body, mentioned the importance of wearing seatbelts in surviving a crash.
An aviation safety institute studied plane crashes between 1983 and 2000 and found a 55% survival rate in severe crashes like this one.
Survivors crawled out of the tail of the plane, statistically the safest spot in a crash according to Time magazine.
The cause of the crash in Kazakhstan is still under investigation.
