Calls for Separate Metro Carriage for Women After Increase in Attacks
germany - Following a growing number of attacks, there are calls for a separate metro carriage for women to enhance safety and prevent harassment incidents.
Over the past ten years, the number of reports of women being seriously harassed has increased by 260%. In 2023, there were 391 incidents, averaging more than once a day.
The lowest point was in February this year when a 33-year-old man attacked and raped a woman over thirty years older in a metro car. The incident took place around midnight during the last journey of the U3 line. After the rape, he calmly exited and continued his journey by bus. He was later arrested.
89% of the victims are women, and 90% of the perpetrators are men.
Antje Kapek of the Greens stated in Bild that better protection for women is 'urgently needed.' She advocates for placing special women's carriages directly behind the driver. Additionally, she proposes increasing video surveillance at stations and installing emergency buttons that victims can press.
