kinshasa - Researchers have discovered 742 new animal and plant species in the Congo Basin, the second largest rainforest in the world.

According to WWF, new species of owls, reptiles, electric fish, shrews, spiders, coffee plants, and orchids have been discovered in the Congo Basin. The rainforest spans six countries including Cameroon, Congo, and Gabon. It is home to a wide variety of animal species, including endangered ones.

The WWF report also reveals that the new animal species have been known for generations by the indigenous population living in the jungle. Their knowledge is crucial for the conservation of the rainforests, which WWF advocates for.
