cambridge - The largest iceberg in the world, heading towards South Georgia Island, has come to a halt about 70 kilometers away.
World's Largest Iceberg Stalls
The massive iceberg, named A23a, broke off from Antarctica in 1986. Weighing nearly a trillion tons and spanning 3500 square kilometers, it is larger than the province of Friesland. Scientists had warned of its collision course with South Georgia, an overseas British territory known for its diverse wildlife including penguins and seals.
If the iceberg remains stationary, the potential impact on the island's ecosystem could be averted, as the cold meltwater could disrupt the local fish population, affecting the food chain for penguins and seals.
