Wildfire in Los Angeles Leaves 16 Dead and 16 Missing
los angeles, california, united states - The wildfires in and around Los Angeles have claimed the lives of 16 people, with 16 others reported missing as strong desert winds are expected to return, making firefighting efforts more challenging.
The wildfires that started in various parts of Los Angeles on January 7 have now resulted in 16 fatalities and 16 people missing. The firefighters, now entering their sixth day of battling the blazes, anticipate the return of harsh desert winds that have been hindering their efforts.
Authorities from the Los Angeles County Department of Medical Examiner-Coroner stated that 11 individuals lost their lives in the Eaton fire, while 5 perished in the Palisades fire. The death toll is feared to rise as dry and strong Santa Ana winds are forecasted to resume their impact this week. Although some progress has been made in containing the fires spread across the region, concerns about the reemergence of dry and strong Santa Ana winds remain.
Approximately 150,000 individuals have been evacuated from the affected areas, where reports of opportunistic price gouging have surfaced. Many residents complained about the doubling of rental and hotel prices, making it difficult to find accommodation. Alex Smith, one of the evacuees, mentioned that friends who had booked hotels outside Los Angeles were faced with higher prices upon arrival.
The wildfires have consumed over 37,000 acres of land thus far. The situation has spurred acts of generosity, with celebrities such as Halle Berry and Kim Kardashian stepping up to assist those impacted. Halle Berry announced on her Instagram account that she would donate her entire wardrobe to a boutique providing free clothes to those affected by the fires. Similarly, Kim Kardashian shared that her brand, Skims, donated lingerie to the families affected by the blazes.
