Venezuelan opposition leader María Corina Machado arrested in Caracas
caracas, venezuela - Venezuelan opposition leader María Corina Machado was forcefully arrested in the Venezuelan capital of Caracas following a nationwide demonstration organized by the opposition.
Venezuelan opposition leader María Corina Machado was forcefully arrested Thursday afternoon in the Chacao neighborhood of the capital city of Caracas by regime enforcers following a nationwide demonstration organized by the opposition.
Gunshots were reportedly fired at the motorcycles carrying Corina Machado and her advisors.
The nationwide demonstration took place the day before the inauguration of the new president. The victory of the presidential elections held on July 28 last year has been claimed by incumbent president Nicolás Maduro, although he has never provided evidence for his victory. He is set to be inaugurated for his third term as president of Venezuela tomorrow.
The united opposition in Venezuela does not recognize Maduro's victory and claims that Edmundo González won the elections based on the results from 85% of the polling stations in the country that are under opposition control. González has announced his intention to return from exile on Friday to be sworn in.
