US Withdraws from Paris Climate Agreement
The United States has formally notified the United Nations of its withdrawal from the Paris Climate Agreement. The decision, communicated in a letter to UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres, states that the US will not be a party to the agreement from January 27, 2026. The Paris Agreement, signed by world leaders on December 12, 2015, during the UN Climate Change Conference in Paris (COP21), aims to combat climate change and its adverse effects.
Former US President Donald Trump had withdrawn the US from the agreement during his first term on November 4, 2020. However, President Joe Biden, who took office on January 20, 2021, reentered the US into the agreement on his first day through an executive order. On January 20, the same day he began his second term, Trump signed an executive order to withdraw the country from the agreement once again. With this decision, the US becomes the fourth country, alongside Iran, Libya, and Yemen, to not be part of the agreement.
