warsaw, poland - US Defense Secretary's call for European allies to increase defense spending sparks concerns in Europe.
US Defense Secretary's Warning to European Allies
During a joint press conference with Polish Defense Minister Wladyslaw Kosiniak-Kamysz in Warsaw, US Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth warned European countries about the possibility of US troop withdrawal from Europe.
Hegseth emphasized the need for European allies to invest in defense spending, stating that the assumption of US presence in Europe lasting forever cannot be made. He urged European countries to take proactive measures against threats like China, highlighting the importance of NATO becoming a strong alliance in the future.
Responding to concerns about Putin's actions, Hegseth expressed mistrust towards the Russian President, stating that Putin would declare victory regardless of the outcome. He also addressed the issue of ceasefire negotiations, mentioning Trump's goal of ending violence and potentially reaching a ceasefire agreement.
Currently, there are approximately 100,000 US troops stationed in Europe, with reports suggesting that Trump is considering withdrawing 20,000 troops in the initial phase.
