warsaw, poland - Defense Minister Pete Hegseth warns that US troops protecting Europe may not stay forever, urging Europe to invest more in its own defense.
US Defense Minister's Warning
During a visit to Poland, Defense Minister Pete Hegseth stated that within the next decade or so, the US will reassess where its military presence is most needed.
The new US government under President Donald Trump has emphasized the growing threat of China in the Asia-Pacific region, suggesting a shift in focus from Europe. Hegseth mentioned the need for Europe to increase its defense spending and take more responsibility for its own defense.
Currently, there are approximately 100,000 US troops stationed in Europe. While there are no immediate plans to withdraw troops, NATO sources acknowledge the possibility of changes in the future. One potential step could involve withdrawing reinforcements deployed by the previous administration.
Although Trump previously considered withdrawing troops from Germany, no significant action was taken. The German government has stressed the importance of a gradual transition and the continued reliance on US military presence in Europe.
