US Court Approves $5 Million Settlement in Trump Defamation Case
united states - US appeals court upholds a jury's decision requiring former President Donald Trump to pay $5 million in a defamation lawsuit filed by E. Jean Carroll.
A US appeals court has approved a $5 million settlement in the defamation case filed by E. Jean Carroll against former President Donald Trump. The appeals court rejected Trump's request for a new trial and stated that there was no indication of errors in the lower court's decision.
In the lawsuit, Carroll accused Trump of sexual assault and defamation, claiming that he assaulted her in a department store dressing room in 1996. Trump denied the allegations, but a jury found him guilty and ordered him to pay $5 million in damages.
Following this initial ruling, Carroll filed a second lawsuit seeking an additional $10 million in damages. In a separate trial, a jury awarded her $83.3 million in additional damages in January 2023.
