US Appeals Court Rejects Trump's Birthright Citizenship Order
The US appeals court has denied the Justice Department's request to reinstate President Donald Trump's order that restricts birthright citizenship for children born in the country.
On January 20, Trump signed an executive order to eliminate automatic citizenship for children born in the US, which was challenged by 18 Democratic state attorneys. A Seattle federal judge temporarily halted the order on January 23, ruling it unconstitutional. Another judge in Maryland issued a nationwide preliminary injunction against the citizenship order on February 6.
Approximately 150,000 children in the US become citizens each year by being born within the country's borders.
