washington - The United States accuses members of the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF) and other militias in Sudan of genocide. RSF leader Mohamed Hamdan Dagalo faces sanctions.
The RSF has been fighting a civil war against the Sudanese army for over a year and a half. Tens of thousands of people have been killed and millions have been displaced. Ethnic violence is particularly prevalent in the Darfur region.
According to US Secretary of State Antony Blinken, the RSF has repeatedly engaged in direct attacks on civilians, targeting and killing male members of the paramilitary group based on their ethnicity. Women and girls from certain ethnic groups are subjected to sexual violence.
