The United States accidentally shot down its own combat aircraft over the Red Sea on Sunday. The two pilots ejected safely and were rescued, with one sustaining minor injuries. The aircraft, which took off from the Harry S. Truman aircraft carrier, was hit by friendly fire from one of the escorting ships.
The incident occurred following an American attack on Houthi targets in Yemen on Saturday. The Houthis have been targeting commercial shipping in the Red Sea for over a year in an attempt to enforce a naval blockade against Israel, claiming solidarity with Palestinians in Gaza.
The US military is investigating how the friendly fire incident involving its own aircraft occurred.
