Ukraine Unveils Powerful New Laser Weapon 'Tryzub': 'Can Shoot Down Aircraft from Two Kilometers Away'
ukraine - Ukraine has developed a new weapon called 'Tryzub' with unprecedented capabilities, according to Ukrainian commander Vadym Sukharevsky. But is it a game-changer or just boasting?
Ukrainian troops are becoming increasingly fatigued nearly three years after the Russian invasion. The new laser weapon 'Tryzub' is seen as a much-needed development. Sukharevsky, commander of the Ukrainian Unmanned Systems Forces, claims the laser can shoot down aircraft from two kilometers away.
Little is known about Tryzub yet. 'It exists and it works,' Sukharevsky said at a defense summit in Kiev. The laser is named after Ukraine's national symbol, a golden trident. However, experts are skeptical about whether this weapon will truly be a game-changer for the Ukrainian military.
Patrick Senft, research coordinator at Armament Research Services, believes Ukraine may have developed a laser weapon capable of targeting aerial threats, especially Russian drones flying at low altitudes vulnerable to laser weapons due to their concentrated energy. However, Senft doubts if Tryzub can effectively target aircraft as Sukharevsky claims.
Fabien Hoffmann, researcher at the Oslo Nuclear Project, is also skeptical, highlighting the need for a powerful laser beam to target fast-moving objects and the impact of weather conditions on laser effectiveness.
Ukraine is not the only country developing laser systems. In March, impressive footage of the British 'Dragonfire' laser weapon emerged, which is lighter and cheaper than traditional missile-based systems. The United States is also deploying anti-drone lasers in the Middle East with reported success against unmanned aircraft. Iran may possess a Chinese laser weapon.
Expectations for Tryzub are high. If the laser can indeed bring down aircraft, it would be a significant advancement for the Ukrainian military. Hoffman is eagerly anticipating the weapon's performance in real-world scenarios before passing judgment on its effectiveness.
